Can Drink Coffee After Drink Drugs?

For many people, coffee has become a daily menu that is never missed even when ill. But have you ever asked, what is the effect of drinking coffee after we take medicine?

Generally, after drinking coffee we will feel fresh and awake. This is because the content of caffeine in coffee that stimulates the work of the brain and heart. However, caffeine in coffee can also interact with several types of drugs. For example ephedrine and phenylpropanolamine, two drugs that work to overcome the symptoms of flu and nasal congestion.

If you drink coffee after taking this medicine, your heart rate will increase dramatically. This is obviously very bad impact on the heart. The same will happen as in asthma medication, theophylline or similar to caffeine, antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs, quinolone antibiotic groups, and birth control pills.

Another danger of drinking coffee after taking the drug is that it can trigger poisoning because caffeine can last longer in the body. That's why caffeine can not be consumed after you take the medicine.

In addition, the efficacy of the drug will last longer (even less potent) if you drink coffee after taking the drug because caffeine interferes with the absorption of drugs in the stomach and small intestine. This effect occurs in some types of drugs, especially classes of antidepressants, esters, and drugs for thyroid disorders and osteoporosis.

A 2008 study showed that the absorption of levothyroxine, which is one of the drugs for thyroid disorders, was reduced by 55 percent when taken with coffee. Similarly, alendronate, a type of osteoporosis drug that absorption is also down 60 percent.

In women, coffee also affects hormonal balance. In some studies, the levels of estrogen and other hormones in women decreased shortly after drinking coffee, so the absorption of some types of drugs can be disrupted.

So if you want to enjoy your coffee, wait at least 2 to 3 hours after taking the medicine. Of course coffee will taste more delicious because it does not cause adverse effects.

  1. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
